Galičica National Park is a mountainous protected area situated between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, offering diverse hiking, wildlife viewing, and dramatic lake vistas.
Galičica National Park spans approximately 227 square kilometers of rugged mountain terrain located in southwestern North Macedonia, forming a natural divide between two of the region's most significant lakes—Ohrid and Prespa. The park’s highest peak, Magaro, rises to 2,254 meters, providing expansive panoramas over the lakes and surrounding landscapes. The park is characterized by its distinctive karst topography, alpine meadows, dense forests, and endemic flora and fauna. The ecosystem supports rare plant species such as the Macedonian pine and the Balkan lynx, a critically endangered carnivore. Established in 1958, the park’s cultural heritage is also noteworthy, including remnants of ancient settlements and local villages that maintain traditional lifestyles. Popular recreational activities include hiking on its well-marked trails that traverse ridges, caves, and viewpoints, as well as mountain biking and birdwatching. Seasonal snow enhances opportunities for snowshoeing and winter hiking. Visitors are drawn to areas like the Mal Tesht peak and the scenic saddle paths between lakes. The park is accessible via regional roads surrounding the lakes, with information available at visitor centers near the towns of Ohrid and Resen. Galičica’s blend of rich biodiversity, geological formations, and scenic beauty makes it a favored destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
